The Majorite Garnet was first discovered in the Coorara Meteorite that hit near the Nullarbor Plains of Western Australia. Small veins of Majorite were found in the meteorite along with Ringwoodite. Majorite is thought to be abundant in the Earth's lower transition zone (550 - 900 km) and upper section of the lower mantle. As convection currents bring it to the Earth's surface it begins to break down and release large amounts of oxygen. It is thought that the large amount of oxygen the Majorite garnet stores plays a part in keeping the Earth's surface moist and habitable. In addition, it has been found in western Canada, and Nigeria meteorites. The Solomon Islands of the South Pacific is the only place on Earth where Majorite was brought to the surface in a Kimberlitic eruption, approximately 34 mya. This Majorite is believed to be the deepest rock found on the Earth's surface. In general, Majorite is very rare and useful as a gem. It is only found in 5 places on the Earth's surface, it's listed as one of the top ten rarest gems in the world, and if often formed in the presence of diamonds.
